A new kind of fishing
Utah fishing is going to be a different beast than Wisconsin fishing. I let out some of my thoughts about the next Utah fishing season in this blog post.
A new area comes with all kinds of new experiences. Fishing is going to be one of those for me. Back in Wisconsin, I did plenty of fishing. I went for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, panfish, walleye, and northern pike. I am definitely not a great fisherman, but over my 22 years, I have caught many fish.
I enjoy it so much because it brings me peace. You take your gear, head to a lake or stream, and just become one with the area around you. Even the sounds engulf my senses. The line whizzes off the reel after a large cast. The bait makes a splash as it disturbs the surface of the water. A released fish's tail kicks up water as it returns to its home. The whole experience feels therapeutic to me.
Utah offers some great fisheries that I can't wait to explore. This will certainly be foreign to me. I am a total newbie when it comes to the popular fishing out here. Fly fishing seems to be the norm. The main target species are trout, though there are smallmouth and other fish. It will be different from what I am used to, but I am excited about a new challenge. I already got a bit ahead of the game and caught my first cutthroat trout a few weeks ago in Yellowstone!
Next spring and summer, I envision starting a series where I film my adventures as a 'beginner Utah fisherman'. I will take you through the process of finding new lakes and streams, catching my first fish, and most likely getting skunked A LOT as I figure out what works. Regardless, it should be a fun experience!
Really anything new that is associated with the outdoors excites me. Let's add trout fishing to the list!
