Ice fishing in the Idaho winter

A beautiful day ice fishing out on Henry's Lake in Idaho

Ice fishing in the Idaho winter

Last weekend I threw a bag together, gathered my gear, and drove up to Island Park, Idaho from Salt Lake City. Winter was in full force as I made my journey. Snow fell peacefully over the roads blanketing the environment beautifully, but dangerously. After some slow driving, I made it to my friend Andy's cabin. We grabbed some shuteye before a full day of ice fishing.

The next morning we grabbed some breakfast, and immediately headed out onto the nearby Lake Henry. After setting up the pop up shanty and drilling some holes, we got right into into fishing.

It was not an amazing day, but we had some action throughout the morning. We lost a few fish unfortunately, but did manage to get a few.  Andy caught two cutthroat trout and I managed to get one brook trout onto the ice.

We broke for lunch after about a hour of no luck. After returning we marked a few fish. I lost a pretty big fish right at the hole which was a bummer. Still, I did add two more to my tally though, including the largest one of the day.

I have had many occasions fishing where I had gone and caught absolutely nothing but weeds and snags. It may have not been the most action filled day, but as they say "the worst day of fishing is better than the best day of work". I was just happy to be out there landing fish. Plus these were my first ever trout through the ice! I couldn't ask for anything more.
